Summary
The ‘Pioneers of Wine’ competition focuses on wines produced from so-called PIWI grape varieties: fungus-resistant and climate-tolerant cultivars. Its objective is to promote sustainable breeding innovations and increase market acceptance. Still, sparkling and semi-sparkling wines containing at least 85% new resistant varieties approved since 1992 were eligible. Products already registered for the Federal Wine Awards participated automatically if criteria were met. Evaluation followed the DLG 5-point scheme®, conducted by at least four specialized experts. Awards were granted in gold, silver, or premium categories. From November 2025, the competition will be replaced by the ‘German PIWI Wine Award’, organized by the DLG in cooperation with PIWI Deutschland e.V..
Our take
The competition presents PIWI varieties as sustainable alternatives, yet defines sustainability primarily through fungal and stress resistance. This is necessary but not sufficient for holistic sustainability. Ecological footprint, soil management, and market integration remain underexplored. The transition to the German PIWI Wine Award suggests institutional consolidation. Sensorial evaluation dominates, while agronomic performance appears secondary. A clearer link between environmental metrics and quality awards would strengthen the claim of being “the most sustainable wine competition.”
